CLOUDS was commissioned and written in 1984 for the London Contemporary Dance Theatre, and was choreographed by the company’s then Artistic Director, Robert Cohan.

The concert version is in three movements with each movement depicting a different skyscape. The “weather condition” of each movement is really only the starting point and basic mood. Thereafter, the music’s development is largely self-generated.

The entire piece is based on nine notes which are stated at the beginning on the ‘cello and answered by the viola. These notes re-appear in their undeveloped state only in the middle movement. Otherwise, the multi-thematic material of the work is made up from fragments and variants of those original nine notes.
