1st String Quartet

An idea for the 1st String Quartet came to me after listening to a lecture on physics. I was fascinated by the thought of matter not really existing as a solid, but being made up of moving energy which creates the illusion of mass, and all mass, including ourselves, being made of “stardust.”

The first movement mirrors the concept of separate particles of energy moving within their own patterns and combining with other separately moving particles. The patterns start chaotically and sometimes come together, becoming more organized as the movement developes.

The second movement is still and has a weightless quality. The phrase “star-gazing from outer space” came to mind.

The third movement is earthy and gravitational.
